Ads now feature in Messenger App
What is it?
Facebook has started testing ads in the Messenger app.
What does it do?
Ads are due to start appearing on the home tab of the Messenger app which, once clicked, will either take the user to the advertiser’s website or into a new chat window where they can interact with the brand. There will be an option to hide specific ads, but it won’t be possible to remove the ads entirely.
Is it a game-changer?
As mobile ads currently make up 85% of Facebook’s revenue, it makes total sense that Facebook would make this move, but it doesn’t stop it from being ridiculously annoying. Dark social is supposed to be a safe space for users to chat with their friends away from pressures like ads, and this update feels like a greedy invasion of this.
