Instagram copies Snapchat’s QR codes with new ‘nametag’ feature

Instagram is rolling out a new way to quickly follow people you’ve met in real life. Nametag works by showing your username on your phone in a format that allows it to be scanned by your soon-to-be follower.

* Instagram is likely hoping the feature will introduce the same kind of low-key information swapping, and bring them as much success, as Snap Codes have for Snapchat. This is not the first time Instagram has taken ‘inspiration’ from Snapchat (Stories…anyone?).  Instead of having to ask people for their Instagram handle, which may feel like an awkward interaction particularly for younger users, they can simply share and scan each other’s nametag.*

Fitbit data used to charge suspect with murder

Heart rate data from a Fitbit has been used to charge a man with the murder of his stepdaughter.

*Data from wearables and smart home devices is proving to be increasingly important to investigators as they attempt to solve crimes that lack reliable witnesses. The NYT cites a 2017 Connecticut trial in which Fitbit data was used to charge a man with the murder of his wife. Investigators also requested data from an Amazon Echo in 2017 in connection with a murder that the speaker’s microphones may have overheard..*

Uber will offer free rides to the polls on Election Day

 On Election Day, Uber is going to make it easy for people to find their local polling places and work with non-profit organisations to give certain groups of people free rides to the polls.

* In the 2016 election, 35 percent of youth surveyed cited a lack of transportation as the reason they didn’t vote. This is a great way of at least removing a logistical barrier for younger voters, and forms part of the wider effort by brands and social media platforms such as Instagram (who used sponsored Stories) to get young people to polling stations.*
