Facebook is considering testing the removal of the ‘like’ count from News Feed posts, hiding the specific number of likes a post has, and replacing the number with something that will read “(mutual friend’s name) and others have liked this”.
For many, ‘likes’ act as a measurement of popularity, with people comparing the amount of likes they get. Facebook states that they hope this change will put less pressure on users and encourage them to post more freely and frequently. This announcement follows Instagram, which recently trialled the removal of the like count in select countries. The trial received some backlash from “influencers” and businesses, with claims that it negatively impacted their livelihood. Given that Facebook is not as much of an influencer-reliant platform, it will be interesting to see, if it does decide to roll out the removal of the like count, whether there will be similar uproar from users.
